Mary Balkam, Mrs. Wallace Broad Herbert Bates Wallace Broad, St. Andrews NB Harriet W. Farrar, Mrs. George M. Hanson George M. Hanson was born on August 28, 1856 in Elmsville, New Brunswick. He moved with his parents to Calais two years later. He graduated from the Calais Academy in 1875, and thereafter read law at the office of Archibald MacNichol. He was admitted to the Washington County Bar in 1877 at the age of 21. Hanson was elected Mayor of Calais in 1885, and again in 1905. He was appointed Collector of Customs for the Passamaquoddy District by President Cleveland in 1895. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Maine in 1904, and made several unsuccessful bids for the House of Representatives from Maine’s 4th District. Hanson was appointed an Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court by Governor Plaisted on July 26, 1911. He served on the Court until his death in Portland on April 4, 1924 at the age of 68.
