This article gives us a glimpse into the life of a
telegraph person on the Maine Telegraph Company line in Maine. This fellow might have known about the Calais
observations, but I suspect that these stations had an automatic
repeater, so the operator would not have to write down and re-send
messages. The Coast Survey bought and installed automatic
repeaters at several locations on the line from Calais to
Newfoundland.
